The first project undertaken by the Leeds Historical Society was researching and marking with attractive signs the historic stagecoach route through Leeds from U.S. Interstate 20 along Alabama Hwy. 119 (Montevallo Road), to Shelby County.
This stagecoach route is believed to be the last one to disappear in the state after the arrival of railroads in the area. The route ran from the old Alabama state capital of Cahawba to Tennessee.
The St. Clair County Historical Society marked the route through the county to Etowah County, and efforts continue to get other counties along the route to take up the project.
The stagecoach route became a scenic byway through Leeds in 2007. |
